Rapid Basement Refurbishment & Moisture Remediation in Operational Retail Environment

In operational retail environments, back-of-house areas are critical to daily performance but often overlooked until conditions begin to impact usability. FMVide was instructed to respond to an urgent situation involving moisture damage and deteriorating wall finishes within a basement storage area, where prolonged dehumidification issues had led to visible damp-related defects and surface degradation.

The Challenge

The affected basement areas presented clear signs of environmental stress, including:

• Elevated moisture levels due to ineffective dehumidification

• Peeling and delaminated paint finishes

• Surface contamination and uneven substrate conditions

• Reduced usability of storage areas during peak operational periods

Our Response

FMVide implemented a controlled, phased programme of works across two consecutive night shifts to minimise disruption to store operations.

Prior to works commencing, all affected areas were:

• Cleared and isolated

• Protected using dust sheets and floor coverings

• Assessed for substrate condition and moisture impact

This allowed safe execution while maintaining surrounding operational areas.

Technical Execution

The scope of works was delivered across four basement rooms and included:

Surface Preparation

• Removal of all loose and failed paint layers

• Mechanical and manual sanding to achieve stable substrate

• Localised scraping and edge feathering

Moisture Treatment

• Identification of damp-affected zones

• Application of appropriate stabilising and sealing treatments

• Preparation of surfaces for redecoration in controlled conditions

Repairs & Making Good

• Localised filling and surface levelling

• Minor plaster repairs to damaged sections

• Reinstatement of uniform wall finish

Decoration Works

• Application of primer coats suitable for previously damp surfaces

• Full redecoration using durable, breathable coatings

• Finishing to a consistent, clean standard across all rooms

Delivery Strategy

Works were completed over two consecutive night shifts, ensuring:

• No disruption to store trading

• Safe segregation between works and operational areas

• Efficient turnaround within a restricted timeframe

All areas were left clean, accessible, and ready for immediate use following completion.
